Methods for Evaluating Double Seams in Metal Can Seaming

Although metal cans have been around for nearly 200 years, they remain the most economical, environmentally friendly, and safest packaging option available today. Double seaming plays a decisive role in achieving the sealing of metal cans. The evaluation of double seaming requires specialized training and a certain amount of industry experience. Therefore, a series of methods are used to analyze and evaluate double seaming. Here are specific analysis methods:

Visual Inspection Method

For a completed double seam, we first observe it and then use our thumb and forefinger to feel its smoothness and evenness. According to Chapter 21, Section 113.60 of the US FDA regulations, visual inspection must be conducted under the following circumstances:

l After each machine jam

l  Whenever the seamer is adjusted

l Whenever the seamer is stopped and restarted

l  Every 30 minutes of seamer operation

All observation results must be documented in writing. The visual inspection method can detect the following defects:

l Sharp edges and burrs

l False seam (note that not all false seams can be observed by visual inspection)

l  Knockdown

l Droop

l  Skips

l Large wrinkles

l Iron tongues
